How the ‘People Ecosystem’ model can help your business to reach its potential

Are you looking for a way to break out of a cycle of employee drama and spend more time growing your business?

Does your business see HR as a last resort or an emergency service for dealing with legal issues or people problems? In which case, your company’s performance may be limited by employee absence, low productivity, or constant churn and recruitment. What if, instead of waiting for problems to escalate, or delivering a quick fix, your people specialist worked with you and your people managers to improve performance, communication, and wellbeing across the organisation? What if you were able to provide an environment where your employees were able to deliver great individual performance and work effectively together? How would that affect your business – and your profit? I’d love to share with you another way to work with the people in your business, and prevent those HR emergencies before they appear.

People solutions

As an experienced HR Director and Executive Coach, I work with a range of commercial clients. I’ve seen first-hand how businesses that provide the right environment for their employees are the most successful and profitable. Conversely, employees faced with unclear business strategies, ineffective management, lack of accountability and poor communications are less likely to reach their potential for your organisation. It's often tempting to treat employee issues as individual problems stemming from isolated circumstances. But this way of dealing with ignores the fact that all work environments are ecosystems. And what is an ecosystem? In your business it’s the community of people interacting with their environment – other employees, systems of working, management and the physical environment. Rather than seeing those HR emergencies as isolated problems demanding quick fixes, my approach is to interpret them as symptoms of the deeper issues holding your company back. That’s why I developed my ‘People Ecosystem’ model to disrupt the patterns that can sabotage your company’s performance. The aim is to increase employee performance and engagement – and statistics show that engaged employees have 81% less absenteeism and drive up to a 23% increase in profits. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

The concept

The People Ecosystem model encourages a deliberate focus on people strategy and culture, behaviours and performance, process and activity, and data and compliance in your business. Focusing on your people strategy means ensuring you have the right people with the right skills in the right roles to enable your business to achieve its plan. Part of that strategy is to ensure you also provide the right environment for your people to be successful, whether that means a focus on reward, wellbeing, flexibility or the physical environment. You’ll build an understanding of where strategy meets culture as you gain clarity on your cultural starting point and your ability to influence its direction. Focusing on behaviours and performance means accountability at every level of your organisation, from the board to the ‘shop floor’. The aim is to promote and enable strong personal performance alongside strong teamwork, consistent people management practices and healthy conflict management. A focus on process and activity is designed to free your people managers from time drains in areas such as recruitment, development and performance management. Putting in place streamlined documentation and processes saves time and energy, giving your people managers the bandwidth to focus on their teams. Data and compliance brings together contracts, policies, documentation, and reporting to help you make the right people decisions, and protect your business from HR emergencies. Together, these improvements give your employees the environment to thrive, engage with your goals, and increase productivity and profits. Treating the causes, not the symptoms, enhances your ‘People Ecosystem’, and gives your business the chance to excel.
